Disc faucets, have fewer parts, and therefore are less prone to leaks. While they are the most expensive type of faucet, they generally require less maintenance, and are usually guaranteed not to wear out. Disc faucets regulate the water flow through the movement of two ceramic discs, which sit one on top of the other, inside a casing, in the body of your faucet. Depending on their position one relative to the other, they will allow hot and or cold water to flow through the tap. The discs fit together very tightly and create a watertight seal. Disc faucets are easily recognized because they consist of a single lever, which sits atop, and is attached to a tall cylinder.
The cartridge containing the two ceramic discs, fits inside the body of the faucet, and it’s stem is protruding upward. Turning the handle turns the stem, which in turn causes the movement of the upper disc on the lower one. Both discs sit on top a neoprene seal, which prevent water leakage.
There are two major causes of leaks n a disc faucet; one is due to worn out neoprene seals, either inlet or outlet; and the other is due to damage to the ceramic discs themselves. An important point to keep in mind is that the disc faucets are sensitive to sand or grit. If the water in your local water source has sand in it, the sand will build up, in the faucet casing, causing the ceramic discs to wear down, and then start to leak. Once the disc is worn down you will have to replace it. Ceramic discs can cost anywhere from $130-$150 a cartridge. Furthermore, if the cause of the leak is grit in the water, than the problem will recur.
Eventually you will have to switch to a different type of faucet, or purchase a filter for you water source that can effectively filter out the sand and grit. Grit levels in water vary from location to location. But even in an area which is relatively grit free water, people using a private water source, such as a well, frequently have a higher level of sand in their water.
On the other hand, ceramic faucets do work well in hard water,.i.e. they are not effected by the buildup of heavy metals, which is not the case, for example with the ball faucet.
Here’s one other tip that may help with the ceramic faucets. If you find that your faucet is dripping, this could be the result of debris that has lodged in between the ceramic discs. Occasionally, lightly jiggling the faucet back and forth will dislodge the particles and end the drip. It’s worth trying, at least once, before you call the plumber.
