Lubrication

Once you have tied your knot, you will then need to tighten it. However, before you do so, you should make sure the line is well-lubricated. Friction creates heat that weakens monofilament whenever you tighten the line. Lubricating it beforehand will help decrease the amount of heat generated when tying the knot. Simply dip it in water or put it in your mouth to lubricate it with your saliva.

Hold

It’s best to tighten fly fishing knots using a slow, continuous pull. To test the hold of the knot, you should pull on the line and leader quite hard. Before you try to land fish with it, you need to ensure that it’ll hold.

Trimming

After tying your knot, you will need to trim excess material away. You should have some nippers handy for this purpose. You’ll need trim as close to the knot as possible. However, you don’t need to get so close that you damage it.

Trash

After trimming the line, you’ll have excess material on your hands. This isn’t a problem if you’re tying fly fishing knots at home, as you can just throw the excess material in the trash. You need to put the trash in your vest or pocket if you’re tying knots close to the water. If can cause harm to animals and fish if you leave it lying in the environment.
